Giuseppina Caltagirone
PHOTOGRAPHER
Born in Rome, Giuseppina Caltagirone grows up in New York where she earns her Bachelor of Arts at Columbia University and subsequently studies photography at the International Center of Photography. At first, she works in the fashion and film industries with the Marisa del Re Gallery in New York. She begins to focus on portraits and is eventually assigned to photograph celebrities like Martin Scorsese and Lauren Hutton for a joint project with Cinecittà.
In time, her acquired mastery of photographic portraiture meets her passion for classical music in a photo report for the Rome Chamber Music Festival, which then develops into an exhibition and a book entitled Adagio, Affettuoso, Appassionato.
Through her lens, she succeeds in capturing the deep intimacy that connects the active idleness of musical instruments to the frailties of the human being. Among her portraits are those of renown conductors Claudio Abbado and Antonio Pappano.
She portrays the grandmasters of orchestral music for the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, where her images are so vivid as to evoke sound itself. She also photographs emblematic details of the city of Ravenna for the exhibition “Wonders of Italy” under the patronage of the Italian Cultural Institute in Brussels.
Upcoming projects for 2020 include a photo book on the secret itineraries of Ancient Rome.

Giuseppina Caltagirone nasce a Roma ma cresce e si forma a New york dove si laurea in filosofia alla Columbia University e studia fotografia all’International Center of Photography. Nei primi anni lavora nel mondo della moda e del cinema presso la Galleria Marisa Del Re a New York. Per Cinecittà ritrae volti di attori e attrici come Martin Scorsese e Lauren Huttton.
Nel tempo, la maestria acquisita per i ritratti incontrerà la passione per la musica classica che la porterà a realizzare un foto reportage per il Rome Chamber Music Festival da cui nasceranno una mostra e un libro intitolati Adagio, Affettuoso, Appassionato.
Con il suo obbiettivo riesce a cogliere l’intimità profonda che collega l’attiva passività di uno strumento musicale alla fragilità dell’essere umano. Tra i suoi ritratti troviamo quelli dei grandi direttori d’orchestra Claudio Abbado e Antonio Pappano.
Per l’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia ritrae i maestri della musica sinfonica dove l’intensità delle sue immagini sembra dare nuova vita alle note musicali. Per l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura a Bruxelles, fotografa particolari suggestivi della città di Ravenna esposti nella mostra “Wonders of Italy”.
Per il 2020 é previsto un libro che illustrerà alcuni percorsi segreti della Roma Antica.
